| Detail of the keyboard. Our client chose bird's-eye maple keytop for the naturals and cherry sharps. The red of the cherry picks up the figure in the bird's-eyes -- very pretty. You can just see the edge of the arcades, the fronts of the naturals. They are also of cherry, a simple scraped moulding applied to the keyfronts before they were cut apart. Because this instrument was intended for a child we chose a non-toxic finish of linseed oil and carnauba wax for the keytops. The keys are full-sized, so the transition to and from other keyboard instruments is easy. Since the tangents attached to the keys contact the strings directly, the keys feel very "alive", constantly giving you feedback about your touch, pressure and attack When you go back to piano, harpsichord or organ after playing a clavichord for a while you will be pleasantly surprised at the precision of your fingering. | |
